March 8th, 2010 Canned beer in an asphalt parking lot
This weather is exalting my rock ‘n’ roll soul. I’m ready to tailgate at Steve Miller Band. I need to dance on the Comcast lawn to Journey. I’m happy to spend an hour in a mile-long line of cars on the way to see Pearl Jam. I don’t even care about the band (that much). As of yet there are very few summer shows announced that I’m dying to see — Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at Comcast (ne Great Woods) being a major exception — but all through the month we’ll get summer tour itineraries. Who do you need to see this summer outside on a hot summer night? And what canned beer will you be chugging in the parking lot before the show?

March 2nd, 2010 Who’s the best guitarist not named Jimi or Jimmy?
I’m working on a feature about “Valleys of Neptune” and the latest batch of Hendrix re-issues for next week. Listening to both the old and “new” Jimi (and thinking about last week’s John Mayer show), it’s so damn clear that this guy is still untouchable. I almost always choose Led Zep over Jimi, but that’s more about personal taste — I often dig my rock ‘n’ roll a little more blunt and plodding. So while the Jimmy vs. Jimi debate may rage forever, Jimi vs. anyone else just seems silly. On “Neptune” there’s an instrumental of “Sunshine of Your Love” — just a little jam tossed off one night — and the guitar work, the tone and nuances and subtle fury, top Clapton’s playing on the original (and Clapton’s original is pretty awesome). So anyway, who’s the best guitarist not named Jimi or Jimmy? I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and wondering about others’ thoughts. Here’s a little video to get you going (wait until 3:30) — thanks to Bill Janovitz for reminding me of this.

March 2nd, 2010 Album of the Week: “Scratch My Back,” Peter Gabriel These are Peter Gabriel songs. Yes, yes, his first new album since 2002 is a collection of songs written by other people, but old Pete manages to make them totally his. Stripped of guitars and drums and affected synths, Gabriel’s voice rides orchestral arrangements that give the material an eerie intensity - think of the version of “Here Comes the Flood” from 1990’s “Shaking the Tree” rather than the one from his 1977 solo debut. And the song selection is wicked good. Half of the tracks come from his peers, including excellent takes on David Bowie’s “Heroes,” Paul Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble” and Talking Heads’ “Listening Wind.” The other half come from modern indie heroes, notably Arcade Fire’s “My Body Is a Cage” and Regina Spektor’s “Apres Moi.” If you hate Gabriel, this won’t change your mind. But if you dig him and were worried this thing would be awful, I assure you it’s far from it.

March 1st, 2010 Slice #28… The final slice! And so it comes to an end. And I’m not tired of pizza. Maybe I’m bored of plain, but — and I may be nuts — I went to Regina’s on Saturday night and then ate leftovers on Sunday while watching one of the greatest hockey games ever. On Saturday my wife wanted pizza so we went and got some (this pie had spinach, broccoli and tomatoes, which made it way too watery). Come Sunday I still needed another slice so got one for lunch. Then we ate the leftovers for dinner. And I’m not tired of pizza. If anyone want to go to Santarpio’s tonight, I’m game. Slice #28 — Mona Lisa Restaurant & Pizzeria, 1625 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, Sunday, Feb. 28 I couldn’t really do Super Slice Me without trying the place closest to me that serves a slice. I live in Somerville, but right across the Cambridge line, five blocks away, is Mona Lisa. I’ve had it before and it’s OK but I needed to try it with my newly critical taste buds. It’s still OK. They serve falafel and shawarma so pizza isn’t their first food. However, unlike most Mid East/Italian mash ups, these guys care enough about their pizza not to just serve up hot garbage. Good color and grease and sauce. While the cheese is too salty, the crust too doughy, it’s big and only $2. I wouldn’t recommend on the slice alone, but if you gotta have falafel and your buddy’s gotta have pizza go for it.
